Tom asked for no hoopla or celebration for his 75th birthday today, but we couldn't let this milestone day just sneak by quietly. Anyone who knows Tom knows he doesn't do things quietly.
So, in honor of Tom's birthday, we have pulled together some photos from the archives to celebrate this special day.
Also worth noting...we thought it would be fun to pull together a list of fun facts that took place in 1935 and here are a few...
Avg. new home cost: $3,450
Avg. salary: $1,600
Avg. new car price: $625
Cost of 1 gallon of gas: 10 cents
Amelia Earhart flies solo across the Pacific
Elvis Presley was born in 1935
The first canned beer goes on sale...and ironically...
Alcoholics Anonymous is founded in New York City
Enjoy a look back at Tom (Mary and family) over the years...

HAPPY 75TH BIRTHDAY TO TOM MOSER!

We were thrilled to see that we made the list of the ten best midlife-crisis trips by TravelandLeisure.com! Our Customer in Residence Program was featured as #6 on the list in the article, Forget the Ferrari: travel can transform your life. Here are 10 trips to make it happen.

Also worth noting:
Pam Hurley Moser (David Moser's wife), owner of Hurley Travel Experts, was quoted in the article on the new wave of travel, including #9 on the list Flying into Outer Space with Virgin Galactic, of which she is an authorized travel agent for.
Very exciting to see Auburn, Maine rank among the likings of surfing in Fiji, climbing Kilimanjaro and traveling to Outer Space!

Our Los Angeles Showroom recently played host to the SDSA (Set Decorators Society of America) annual holiday party. We were excited to be able to introduce our work to those responsible for creating the environments we see on TV and in the movies.

Thank you to the SDSA for selecting our showroom for their holiday gathering, and to the wonderful partners that work with them on TV and movie sets and helped make this event special, including Eclipse-Worldwide, Aah Inspiring Balloons, Dr. Christmas Rents, Tic Tock Couture Florals, Classic Party Rentals, Skinny Dog Design Group, and Lamp Expo. The event also supported the Spark of Love toy drive.

Many of the set decorators who attended were unfamiliar with Thos. Moser, but a few had worked with us in the past.

One particular woman told a story of a Thos. Moser Pencil Post Bed she wanted to purchase for a movie set that she was decorating years ago. Given the temporary nature of movie set, the producer thought the bed was just too expensive to purchase, so she agreed to buy the bed from the producer after the shoot (at a substantial discount) if he would purchase the bed for the film. He agreed, and she has enjoyed the bed every night since then.

The night of the party she was so very excited to see the same Pencil Post Bed on our showroom floor! After talking to her about how the bed was made and showing her that each woodworker signs each piece, she was going to go home and tear her bed apart looking for the woodworker's signature.

You may be interested to know that Thos. Moser is no stranger to film and TV. In 2004, our furniture was featured extensively in "The Notebook", the movie adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks book starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. More recently, the award-winning (yet short-lived) TV drama "Commander In Chief" used our furniture in the show's version of the White House (CLICK HERE to watch the TV news story that ran about it here in Maine).

Other film credits for Moser furniture include "Bicentennial Man" with Robin Williams, "Braveheart" with Mel Gibson, "Waiting to Exhale" with Whitney Houston, "Taking Lives" with Angelina Jolie, "The Invasion" with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, and "Not So Big House" with Sarah Susanka.

In addition to "Commander in Chief", Moser furniture has been seen on TV in such shows as "This Old House", "The Price Is Right" (way back in 1984, Episode 914), "Simply Ming" with Ming Tsai, "Nash Bridges", and "Maine in Maine".
Thanks again to the SDSA, we look forward to working with your members for many years to come!

One of the exciting “side effects” of our Customer in Residence (CIR) program has been the special bond that is created between the program alumni and the people of our company.
For example, this week we received an email from Janette, a CIR alumni from this past Spring. Janette attended the program with her dad Joseph, who is an accomplished woodcarver in his own right. Together with master craftsman Jim Boisvert, Janette and Joseph built an Aria Writing Desk during their CIR week here in the shop. When Jim heard that Joseph creates wood carvings, he gave Joseph a block of cherry to take home. Joseph took that block and carved it into a beautiful dolphin statue as a gift for Jim...

(the carving sent to cabinetmaker Jim Boisvert)
Now Janette has sent a photo of another remarkable carving by her dad, which he did shortly after completing the dolphin carving for Jim. We are amazed! This time Joseph has brought his talent to bear on a carving of the Aria Writing Desk that he had built with his daughter...
Without the quarter on top, it would be hard to tell that it wasn’t the real thing (shown at right). So now Janette has the full size desk; and Joseph he has this one.
The details in Joseph's work are really remarkable...to view at a larger size, click on this thumbnail:
Here’s a shot of Jim, Janette and Joseph in the shop just prior to finishing the actual full-size desk that they built together...

(the trio and their Aria desk)
You also might enjoy this video clip of Janette and Joseph talking about their CIR week at the final signing ceremony on the last day of their stay with us:
Thanks to Janette and Joseph for sharing these photos with us, and to all our CIR alumni for their continued support and friendship!
